Tamiya's Pz IV Ausf H.. with Eduard Etch, JR Barrel and Tank Workshop Engine  02/02/03

The first kit that I bought when getting back into the hobby was the Tamiya Pz IV Ausf H.. I guess I was too chicken to try such a nice kit in the beginning... This is one of the first of the 'new' Tamiya kits I've worked on. In my short stint back in the hobby I've built the 'old' Panther, Tiger... also the KV1 and T34 Chtz.. all these are nice kits but older.. I must say I am amazed at the quality of the 'newer' kits... I can't wait to hit the Wespe, Panther G and Stug G! And of course whatever other 'new' Tamiya kits that make there way to my 'to build' shelf!

The Eduard etch set has two frets that add the usual extra detail.. tool clasps.. fenders.. extra detail inside the hatches.. the usual... I recommend this set to anyone looking to 'etch' update their kit.

Just recently prior to starting this build I also got the Tank Workshop engine compartment.. This update is very nice, and affordable..

However I was perplexed for a little bit at the lack of Cooling Fans... To the point where I ordered the Tank Workshop separate cooling fans from an online hobby shop.. Then to find out while building the kit that there are cooling fans included in the kit.. No mention in the instructions... Maybe at some point Tamiya was planning on doing an engine compartment but never did...
While building.. I decided that I didn't want to use the solid resin plug for the cooling fan housing, and decided after some encouragement from Jim Norian to make my first attempt at scratchbuilding.

I am also adding the Jordi Rubio barrel (thankyou Robert Burnside).. which is very nice! The muzzle required some cleanup.. but it comes with a mantle that makes it fit the kit like a glove! I highly recommend this barrel

I also cut some doors for the turret Schurtzen doors and bent some scrap etch for latch and clasps

I've used sheet styrene for the hull Schurtzen. The Bolts came from the Academy Honey kit.. and I used scrap etch for brackets.

This kit is slow going (for my skills), but a lot of fun! I figured I'd take some pictures before I possibly ruin it in the Paint phase.. and put them up on the website.
